Green, white and red, meeting the Stars and Stripes halfway
The left hand carries the United States, the blue canton with its white stars sitting out on the forearm and the red and white stripes running across the fingers. The right hand carries Mexico: a deep green band down the inner side, over the curled fingers, a white band through the middle of the hand, a red band along the outer edge and out along the forearm, and the eagle on that white band, perched on the cactus with the serpent, wreathed in green and drawn small but complete. The hands meet in the middle and leave a heart open between them, black, unpainted, the shirt itself. PERFECT HERITAGE runs below in thin white capitals with wide spacing.
Who it’s for
A Mexican American heritage shirt has to carry a lot without saying much, because it will be worn by a nineteen year old in Phoenix and by his grandmother in the same week. This one says two things only: where the family comes from, and where it lives now. It works for a birthday, for a quinceanera, for the sixteenth of September, and for a Tuesday.
The detail that matters
