Black, red and gold, meeting the Stars and Stripes

The left hand carries the United States, the blue canton with its white stars out on the forearm and the red and white stripes running across the fingers. The right hand carries Germany, in three horizontal bands that follow the shape of the hand: black across the top of the fingers, a deep red through the middle, and gold along the bottom edge and out along the forearm. No eagle, no crest, nothing but the three bands, which is exactly how the flag is worn. The hands meet and leave a heart open between them, black, unpainted, the shirt itself. PERFECT HERITAGE runs below in thin white capitals with wide spacing.

Who it’s for

The largest ancestry group in the United States, and the quietest about it. Forty-two million Americans have German roots, and most of them own nothing that says so, because what is on the rack is usually a beer stein and a joke about lederhosen. A German American heritage shirt that says nothing more than where the family came from fills a gap that is oddly large.

The detail that matters

The gold is gold, not yellow. It is the one thing people from the country notice first, and the one thing most prints get wrong. Same standard as the rest of the series, which began with the Guatemalan American Perfect Heritage Heart Tee.
