I love the smell of gunpowder in the morning
The whole print is typography, set in military stencil lettering with the little breaks in the strokes that stencils always leave. Four lines stack up and alternate between positive and negative. The top line, I LOVE, is cut out in black from a solid white bar, and the L of LOVE is not a letter at all: it is a pistol stood on end, slide and barrel pointing straight up to make the upright of the letter, grip and magazine lying flat along the bottom to make its foot. The second line, THE SMELL OF, is white type straight on the black shirt. The third, GUNPOWDER, goes back into a white bar with the letters knocked out in black. The fourth, IN THE MORNING, returns to white on black. No period, no exclamation mark, no artwork besides that one pistol.
Who it’s for
Airsoft players, range officers, and the people who genuinely do get to the club before the coffee has kicked in. The film reference is right there and everybody catches it, which is what makes a smell of gunpowder shirt work as a club gift: nobody has to have the joke explained at the sign-in table.
The detail that matters
The alternating bars. Because two of the four lines are reversed out of white blocks, the design keeps its shape from a long way off, and the eye finds the rhythm before it finds the words. That is also why the hidden pistol lands: you read the sentence first, then notice the L.
