United States of America and Ireland
On the right of this print, Ireland is drawn in flat white with its coastline rough and readable, the whole island, and a filled red heart set inland. The continental United States takes the left with its own red heart, and Ireland stands nearly as tall in the print as the mainland beside it. Between them the red dashed line does not run straight: it steps down across the water and stays low all the way into the west coast, so the heart on Ireland ends up sitting lower on the chest than the heart on the mainland. Who it’s for
Not a recent arrival, usually. This one goes to the family in Boston, Philadelphia or Chicago whose great-grandmother came over and whose surname still gets pronounced correctly at home. It goes to the cousin who did the trip to Cork and came back different.
