Haiti at the End of the Red Line

Two white shapes fill the upper chest. The continental United States on the left, and on the right Haiti drawn on its own, cut along the Dominican border instead of shared out as half an island, its northern claw and its long southern peninsula reaching back toward the mainland on either side of the bay that opens on the west coast. A filled red heart sits inland toward the eastern side of the country, the second sits in the middle of the United States, and a red dashed line joins them, curving down over the water and rising again at the far end. Below the maps, in fine white handwriting, United States of America runs to the left, two red outlined hearts overlap at the center, and Haiti closes the line on the right.

Who it’s for

Haitian families in North Miami, Brooklyn, Boston and Orlando. People who speak Creole at the table and English at work, and French when the occasion calls for it. Grandchildren who have heard about Jacmel and Cap-Haitien their whole lives. The usa haiti two countries shirt keeps the tone plain and warm: a map, a heart, the name of the country in full, and nothing anyone has to explain or defend.

The detail that matters

Nothing on this design is a slogan. There is no verb, no claim, no punchline. Two maps, two hearts, one line, one country name spelled correctly. That restraint is why it can be worn to church, to a graduation, or to the airport on the way to Port-au-Prince.
