Nakupenda, Swahili for I Love You Script Tee

Nakupenda, brought back from further away than most souvenirs

A long word deserves a long line, and it gets one. Nine letters run across the watercolor heart in white script, opening with a big looped N that starts to the left of the paint and closing with an A that lands beyond the right lobe, an underline sweeping back beneath the middle. The heart is two brushed washes, rose and blush, edges left raw where the brush lifted. Five solid red hearts are scattered across and below it, the largest in the cleft at the top, the smallest falling off the bottom point, with a few flicked specks to the sides. On black, the white script does all the reading.

Two kinds of buyer

This is the only African language in the shop, and it gets bought for two different reasons. Sometimes it is a nakupenda swahili love shirt for a couple with roots in Kenya or Tanzania. Sometimes it is a souvenir, carried home from a trip and handed to the person who stayed behind. Both are perfectly good reasons.

One word, three pieces

Swahili builds the phrase the way Hungarian does, in one piece: na for I, ku for you, penda for love. Say it nah-koo-PEN-dah. Strangers ask what it means, which is half of what makes it fun to wear.
