Filipino Nurse, and you are in good hands

FILIPINO NURSE fills the top of the print in tall white condensed capitals. The last three letters of the first word, INO, are filled with the Philippine flag instead of white, blue in the upper block, red below, so the country cuts straight through her job title. Three short bursts of red zigzag, drawn like a heart monitor scratching, sit behind the first letters along the top line. In front of the lettering stands an illustrated nurse, dark hair pulled back, white surgical mask, white uniform with navy trim and a Philippine flag patch on the sleeve, arms folded. Curving along the bottom in white capitals: YOU ARE IN GOOD HANDS.

Who it’s for

Filipino nurses working American floors, and the families who send them off to night shifts. It is a graduation gift, a pinning ceremony gift, a shirt for the drive home after twelve hours. Colleagues buy it for each other, which is how most of these end up worn.

The detail that matters

The crossed arms and the level gaze are the whole point. This is not a cute cartoon nurse. She is calm, she is done explaining herself, and the phrase under her is a statement of fact rather than a promise. For a profession that carries so much of the Filipino story in the United States, that tone is the right one. A Filipino nurse shirt Pinoy colleagues will actually wear has to survive a break room full of them, and this one does. Prefer the phrase in Tagalog? That one is Nurse Ako Proud to Be Filipino, same idea, its own drawing.
