married, adjective
The whole print is typography, white on black, set out exactly like a page from a dictionary. The headword comes first, married, in a large serif with real weight to it, followed by its phonetic spelling in brackets. A rule runs underneath. Then the part of speech, adjective, in italics. Then the entry itself, numbered 1, in three lines of the same serif: because life’s adventures are better when you have someone to say, I told you so at the end of them. No illustration, no ring, no heart, no cursive. Just the joke, set as though a lexicographer had lost an argument and written it down.
Who it’s for
Anniversaries, engagement parties, and the friend who has been married eleven years and still tells the story about the map. A married definition shirt is one of the rare wedding gifts that gets worn on an ordinary Tuesday, because it reads as dry rather than sentimental.
The detail that matters
The phonetic spelling. It is the small piece that sells the format: without it the shirt is a slogan, and with it the shirt is a dictionary entry, and the reader plays along for the extra second it takes to notice.
