Accessibility

We want this site to work for everyone who wants to read it, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard alone, a magnifier, or a browser set to large text.

What we aim for

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. That is the level courts and settlements in the United States generally treat as the benchmark, and it is the one we build against.

What is in place today

  • One h1 per page, and heading levels that follow in order without skipping.
  • Landmarks on every page: header, nav, main and footer, so a screen reader can jump straight to the content.
  • A skip link as the first thing in the page, so a keyboard user can reach the content without walking the whole menu.
  • Alternative text on every product image, describing the design rather than repeating the file name.
  • A visible focus outline on every link, button and field. It is never removed.
  • Body text at a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against its background.
  • Layout that reflows to a phone screen at 375 pixels wide with no horizontal scrolling.
  • Motion that respects the prefers-reduced-motion setting: if your system asks for less movement, the site stops animating.
  • Labels on every form field, including the search box.

Where it falls short

Being honest is more useful than claiming perfection.

  • Product descriptions describe each design in words, but a purely visual pun may still land better for a sighted reader than for someone hearing it read aloud.
  • Once you click through to Amazon, you are on Amazon’s site, and its accessibility is not ours to control or to promise.
  • This site has not yet been audited by an independent third party. What is listed above was checked by us, not certified by anyone else.
